The Early Pedal Harp

A couple of years back, I gave a talk about how stringing changed over the history of the pedal harp.
Some people asked me to write it down, and I did, but earlier this year some vital information about stringing later instruments came from Christopher Shayne, who generously allowed me to include it, so I added some other research and have codified it into a booklet...
This deals with string material, stiffness, and how gauges have changed, and how harp design changed between the mid-18th century and the early 20th century, so you can get the best out of antique instruments.
Although it deals with the pedal harp, there is a short section on the early modern clarsach, so Briggs, Morley, Clark, Quinn etc. up to Sanderson and Taylor, Brown and Bruce, and those who went on to build instruments based on their designs
Like all my work, I do not claim it to be infallible or exhaustive, and I am careful to point out where it is purely conjectural, but I hope those with antique or vintage instruments will find it of interest and use.
I am not making an E version, as it has become too complex, but I can send the PDF where the print version isn't viable

My translation of the known 18th C méthodes for pedal harp is available on Lulu for the hard copy, which is published at print cost and P&P, or the PDF version is available by contacting me directly.
Whilst many members here have no issue with reading the French or German texts, a number of my students found the original engraved sources difficult to decipher, so I present them in English.
Where I own an original copy, I have included the musical examples too, and cite sources of onlive versions of the ones I could not include in complete form.
My translations (especially the German) are neithe infallible or exhaustive, but I hope they will prove useful to some.

some of the concepts contianed are discussed in my book A Very Imperfect Instrument, which discusses practical use and development of the single-action harp

Again, not infalible or exhaustive, but hopefully useful
